Do It Yourself or Let Others Take Over?

Tooth discoloration is a big problem that can affect both your career and social life. What sensible employer would prefer an employee with yellow teeth, especially when you’re in the business of beauty or entertainment?

And what about dating? Do you think dentals that badly need a teeth whitening treatment will make a favorable impression on your date? No? Well, I didn’t think so, too.

Now that we’ve established the need for a teeth whitening treatment, it’s time to decide whether you want a do it yourself teeth whitening treatment or prefer to have the professionals take over? Whichever method works fine of course but you know what suits you the best. The following detail the pros and cons of both teeth whitening methods.

For do it yourself methods, there are two ways to go about teeth whitening: bleach solutions and whitening toothpastes. Bleaching solutions contain peroxide – a chemical that’s responsible for bleaching the enamel and giving it remarkable whiteness.

The whiteness, however, doesn’t match the intrinsic color of teeth. Bleaching solutions, although virtually effective as a teeth whitening product, may cause detrimental side effects like teeth sensitivity or soft tissue irritation. Bleaching solutions are often used from one to two weeks and results can be seen afterwards.

The second type of do it yourself teeth whitening product, whitening toothpastes, contain mild abrasives that remove teeth stain. Some of these teeth whitening toothpastes also contain special polishing ingredients to have more effective results.

If you’re planning to choose do it yourself teeth whitening methods, make sure that whatever teeth whitening product you’ll choose contains the ADA seal of approval. This may drastically limit your selection but at least you can be assured of dental safety.

For professional teeth whitening treatments, dentists can either do or supervise treatments at their clinics or your own home even. Chemicals like carbamide and hydrogen peroxide are often used in such teeth whitening treatments.

Six shades of whitening can easily be achieved in less than an hour. Whitening gels may also be used as supplement and to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. A maximum of twelve to fifteen shades of whitening can be achieved by professional teeth whitening treatments.

Professional teeth whitening treatments are naturally more expensive than do-it-yourself-treatments but nonetheless, it’s also safer and more affective.

The choice is yours – Do it yourself or let the others take over?
