Toothpaste Option

Have you ever wondered how your toothpaste can manage to maintain the shine and whiteness of your teeth? Have you ever asked what is the “secret” formula of your friendly-neighborhood toothpaste? Well, read on.

One of the most important things to look for in a toothpaste is fluoride. It is known to have that effect against fighting tooth decay. The British Dental Association said that for every ten individuals, nine of them don’t get sufficient fluoride from their supply of water, so we don’t need to use as much as we can from our toothpaste.

Another ingredient of most of our toothpastes is abrasives. Abrasives work best in removing plaque. There is a belief that abrasives in a toothpaste can wear away the enamel because of their mildness. As a result of too much brushing, erosion of the enamel is more likely to happen.

Some toothpastes contain baking soda which is a mild abrasive an is effective in removing stains in your teeth. No result is actually produced compared with other types of toothpastes but id does help an individual brush their teeth more thoroughly.

Your toothpastes are used for different reasons. Aside from the ingredients that they contain, they are also meant to be used for different purposes.

Tartar control toothpastes contain pyrophosphate, an ingredient that helps in the reduction of tartar. Tartar is a white or yellowish deposit that is formed by the hardening of plaque mixed with minerals in the saliva. However, once formed, no toothpaste can effectively remove it. This will require professional help from a dentist or dental hygienist.

Whitening toothpastes are distinct from bleaching products. While bleaching products are used to whiten the teeth, whitening toothpaste are simply used to remove stains in the surface of the teeth

Sensitive teeth is generally caused by minute tube-like canals that crosses to the teeth and connects to nerves in the mouth. When uncovered, these tubes are stimulated by heat, cold and selected foods which cause pain. Blocking or reducing the ability of these nerves to transmit pain is the work of a desensitizing toothpaste.

This kind of toothpaste contains strontium chloride and potassium nitrate which are designed for sensitive teeth. Using a desensitizing formula requires patience since it may take 4 – 6 weeks for the formula to work. It will be helpful to seek the advice of your dentist since sensitive teeth may be a symptom of another problem that needs to be treated.

Trying out a new formula or product is not bad if you are really keen in whitening your teeth. But it is always advisable to seek the advice of a dentist.
