Night-Guard Tooth Whitening
Night-guard tooth whitening is also known as at-home dentist-supervised tooth whitening. It is another procedure of bleaching your teeth with the guidance of the dentist. This is usually cheaper than the in-office procedure since you don’t have to stay long in the dental clinic and take up the dentist’s time. But it requires you to perform some steps and you must be very diligent and careful in doing them.
Like the in-office tooth whitening procedure, the first step is always an assessment done by your dentist. He or she checks the health of your gums, if your teeth are sensitive, the cause of the teeth discoloration, and if you are pregnant. Pregnant women are advised not to have their teeth whitened.
The dentist will advise you if the at-home whitening treatment is appropriate for you or not. If not, you will be advised to undergo other types of dental treatment. You will also discuss other dental procedures that you must undergo after the tooth bleaching. For example, you may already be wearing a couple of false teeth, which color fits right in with the rest of your teeth.
No teeth whitening treatment can change the color of false teeth, cavity filling, or any other dental work you may have had. Thus, after the teeth whitening treatment, the now slightly darker false teeth will stand out like a sore thumb. It must be replaced.
Once you have agreed to utilize the night-guard treatment, the dentist prepares a mold to determine the unique shape of your set of teeth. He or she will create a mouthpiece that is modeled according to the teeth mold. You will come back on specific date when you will try on the bleaching tray inside your mouth.
It is supposed to fit perfectly but it does not go up all the way to the gums. As you fit the bleaching tray, you will feel some discomfort and you may not be able to pronounce words as elegantly as you always do. If there is pain or too much discomfort, the dentist will re-adjust the bleaching tray, or make a new one. The dentist will also give you a prepared solution of whitening gel with instructions on when and how much of it must be used. This will be your bleaching kit.
What you will do at home is to squirt a little amount of the gel into specific areas of the bleaching tray. Then you will place the tray in your mouth. If excess gel comes out, you must immediately wipe this with either your finger or your toothbrush. Do not let it stay on your gums. You will wear the bleaching tray for as long as the dentist instructed you.
Often, the instruction would be for you to wear it at night. This is why
this treatment is called “night-guard”. After several days or
weeks, you will report back to the dentist and evaluate the effectiveness
of the treatment.
