Over-the-Counter Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening has become a popular cosmetic procedure that over-the-counter whitening products are now available in pharmacies and other stores. There are home-kits, commercial bleaching trays, whitening strips, and bleaching pens. Similar to the whitening gels used and provided by dentists, the over-the-counter bleaching kits have carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient. The chemical process that goes in the teeth is still the bleaching-oxidation reaction.

What makes it advantageous is that it is cheap and easily available. You need not pay expensive consultation fees for the dentist. All you have to do is go to the nearest drugstore and purchase the teeth whitening product.

The newest, which are the teeth whitening pens, acts much like an instant “face-lift” for the teeth. It is also convenient to carry around. It is ideal for people who need to travel a lot. The whitening pen’s advantage over the whitening strip is that it can cover all the teeth. A teeth whitening pen of a known brand (Brite Smile) could be used once a day. After applying the gel, the user would need only wait 30 minutes for the chemical to dissolve. Then the user may eat or drink. But a significant difference would only be noticeable after about two weeks, or fourteen applications. At present, this product is available only through dentists.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are not as potent as the ones administered by dentists. But some uninformed users would become “bleaching addicts” that they would overuse the product and go beyond the dosage instructions stated in the labels. The reason is not addiction, but an over-zealousness to have that brilliantly white teeth. As a result, these users would experience severe gum irritation, extreme tooth thermal sensitivity, and even damage to the enamel.

The greatest danger of using the over-the-counter whitening products is that no dental professional is making sure that everything works correctly and safely. The teeth whitening needs of people are not exactly the same. Some would need more dilute concentrations and some would require higher concentrations. Severe side effects would be likely experienced by the careless or uninformed user.

Another danger is that many over-the-counter whitening products do not indicate that before using any of them, the teeth must be professionally cleaned. All cavities must be filled because the peroxide might get inside them and reach the live nerve of the tooth. This would be extremely painful. The gums must be healthy too. Otherwise, it could not tolerate the presence of peroxide on the nearby teeth.

It is still safer and more effective to consult a dentist when you want your teeth whitened.
