An interesting 2004 survey that the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) http://www.aacd.com/ showed that teeth whitening is a serious concern to many Americans. In fact the generic survey with no indications of purpose to the survey showed that a bright shiny smile to be the single most important factor in many categories. For example:

•  99.7% of adults believe that an attractive smile is a very important social asset.

•  96% conversely feel that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex.

•  And quite possibly the most important factor, 74% of those surveyed believed that an unattractive smile can be very detrimental to a person's chances of success in their career.

Also of interest in the survey it revealed:

The survey asked, "What is the first thing you notice in a person's smile?" to which the most common responses were:

• Straightness
• Whiteness & Color of Teeth
• Cleanliness of Teeth
• Sincerity of Smile
• Any Missing Teeth?
• Sparkle of Smile

The survey also asked, "What types of things do you consider make a smile unattractive?" to which the most common responses were:

• Discolored, Yellow, or Stained Teeth
• Missing Teeth
• Crooked Teeth
• Decaying Teeth & Cavities
• Gaps & Spaces in Teeth
• Dirty Teeth

And finally, when respondents were asked, "What would you most like to improve about your smile?" the most common response was to have whiter & brighter teeth.
