Ozone or Teeth Whitening?

Ozone and the chemical used in teeth whitening (peroxide) have one similarity: they both react with materials on the teeth and the process is called oxidation. The effect of teeth whitening is to lighten the color of stained or discolored teeth. But if the discoloration is due to tooth decay, then using ozone will be more effective.

From a chemist’s point of view, ozone is a substance, in which one molecule is composed of three atoms of oxygen. Everyone is familiar with ozone since its well-publicized function in the ozone layer, which is to deflect the sun’s harmful cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation away from our planet. Then, ozone was found to also pollute the lower layers of the atmosphere, where it aids the formation of photochemical smog and contribute to respiratory diseases.

Ozone was found to have an ability to deactivate enzymes. This is when scientists took a closer look at ozone and found out more about its properties and its potential uses. One such use is in water sewage treatment. Through a process called oxidation, ozone can be used to treat drinking water. It acts like chlorine, but less ozone is needed to produce the same effect.

And now, ozone can be used in the field of dentistry. Ozone is used to stop the progress of tooth decay and even reverse its process. In one operation, ozone is able to kill approximately ninety-nine percent of bacteria that cause tooth decay. It not only inhibits the tooth decay to spread, but it can also restore healthy teeth.

Using ozone is a high-tech procedure which is painless especially when tooth decay is at its early stages. This is because it involves no injection and no drilling. For children who fear going to clinics because dentists wield wrench-like tools and big injections, using ozone may be a good option. The kids will be assured of having health teeth without suffering other painful dental procedures.

Using ozone also brings rapid results. Decay-causing bacteria are decimated by ozone in less than one minute. Some dental clinics even claim that it can be done in about twenty seconds only.

Using ozone is also safe since this substance is carefully and selectively delivered unto the decayed parts only. The method of applying ozone prevents this chemical from diffusing to and harming other healthy teeth or other parts of the mouth.

The use of ozone is indeed one of the most modern methods used in treating and preventing tooth decay. It is painless, effective, and safe. The only downside with this technology is that it is expensive.
