Whitening My Teeth

Just as hair color differs from one individual to another depending on race, daily activity, diet or certain visits to the salon ... so are there differences in the shades of the color of our teeth. Likewise, while people have a list of reasons for why they would like to alter, enhance or improve the color of their hair (to hide age, to accentuate facial features, "to bring out their eyes"...), people might also have different reasons for wanting to whiten their teeth (to mask years of smoking, to have that celebrity grin, to even the hues between their own teeth, to balance the colors between real and false teeth over time).

Professional bleaching is the most common procedure employed today. If your dental health practitioner approves you for the treatment then he will probably schedule you for the sessions required to complete the procedure ... which must be done from his dental clinic, by the way.

Professional bleaching makes use of a mixture of hydrogen and carbamide peroxide as whitening agents. These are placed in a special tray resembling a gum shield, custom fitted to your mouth. The active ingredients are broken down, releasing oxygen into the enamel of your teeth. When this happens, this causes your teeth to lighten.

This procedure can usually be completed within 3-4 weeks time from the time you first visit your dentist when he measures you up for your mouthpiece to the time he lets you bring your kit home for follow-up treatments on your own in the convenience of your home. Home treatment will usually entail wearing your mouthguard with the chemical mixture each night for about an hour at a time from the 2nd to the 4rth week. However, there have also been developed a new line of products for teeth whitening bearing more potency where you will be required to wear your mouthguard for durations of up to eight hours a day ... but the upside to this is that results can be expected within just one week's time.

Aside from this, there is also what is known as the laser whitening or power whitening procedure. Here each tooth is actually painted with a bleaching product, afterwhich, heated with a laser light. The laser activates the chemical in the whitening product. This procedure is said to be more potent as it can lighten the color or your teeth up to 5 or 6 shades lighter than original, in less time and with longer lasting effects. This procedure usually takes about 1 hour.

Teeth whitening is said to last about 3 years but of course this is dependent on many factors meaning that the lasting effects actually vary from person to person; not only depending on your oral lifestyle before the procedure, but after the procedure as well.
