Laser Bleaching

Having whiter teeth is what more and more people want. Who could blame them? Having whiter teeth can give a person better self confidence. It will also help them become more attractive even though they look really weird. That’s why scientists have continually made lots of products to whiten the teeth of a person. From home based products to those that require dental supervision.

One of those products that require dental supervision is the Smart bleach. Smart bleach is an in-office photochemical laser bleaching system. Bleaching by Smart bleach is done by absorbing molecules in dental structures by using large lights. The molecules will then become smaller which are no longer in a light absorbent state. When that happens, the teeth become more reflected and become whiter.

They believe that this can be done because teeth stains caused by tetracyclines can be removed within 24 hours, by using light only. They base this practice on the research of Lloyd W. Burgess, Loong Chün Lin, and David L. Pitts that was published on the journal of Endodontics on 1988.

Two kinds of light are only used in photo bleaching they are UV light (290 nm and 365 nm) and green light (510 to 534 nm). Smart bleach uses a laser light in the green range together with hydrogen peroxide and a chemical agent powder. The following materials will then have a photochemical reaction. Bleaching through Smart bleach is controllable, safe and fast (1 hour).

It is the photochemical reaction that causes the stains to be removed which includes tetracycline. It also prevents the risk of having heat build up on the teeth. Be warned however that only certain wavelengths can produce that photochemical reaction. If too much wavelength is used it may cause pulp drama or tooth damage. If too little there might be no results.

Also be warned of misleading dentist who claims to use Smart Bleach lasers. Some will only use heat lamps or halogen lights. They have no bad effects on the patient but sometimes doctors may charge you for the amount of a Smart Bleach. The effectiveness of heat lamps or halogen lights is not as impressive.

In conclusion, dentists who add tooth whitening into their wide array of services should learn more about tooth whitening. This will help because it won’t mislead the patient into expecting greater results out of nothing. There are now various ways to make a patient’s teeth brighter, but if the patient will risk his health, I’m pretty sure they’d be happy to settle for yellowish teeth.
