Healthy Teeth Means A Healthy Smile
The person’s smile is always the best asset and the very first thing that people see. It is therefore necessary that we always maintain a healthy smile.
The dentin layer and enamel layer protects our teeth. As we put stuff in our mouth like food or cigarettes, another layer is gradually formed on top of the enamel layer. These foreign materials accumulate and form what is called a pellicle film.
If the pellicle film is not removed in the teeth, foreign materials quickly
accumulate in the enamel layer. This portion of the teeth is porous, which
means that staining agents are able to find a way to enter without being
removed.
Enter tooth whiteners. Tooth whiteners serve the same purpose of dishwashing liquid and detergents by scouring and removing staining agents found in the teeth. It contains bleaching chemicals like carbamide or hydrogen peroxide which serves as the whitening agent.
There are many ways by which we can undergo the tooth whitening process. There is the dentist-supervised. In this process, the dentist cleans the teeth using pumice, rids the cavities and puts protective barriers in the gums before applying the treatment. In the treatment process, the dentist uses hydrogen peroxide coupled with high intensity light in order to speed up the bleaching chemicals reaction. There is no guarantee that tooth whitening will work to all patients. For instance, patients with infected gums, decayed teeth, white spots on their teeth and multiple caps on their teeth. The advantage of this process is that the dentist can always monitor the patient. The dentist can modify the initial process to achieve better results. He can also suggest the best possible treatment or if no treatment is necessary. Furthermore, the dentist can provide the patient with other dental options like resins, tooth fillings and others. The dentist, then, serves as an aid in achieving the patient’s dental goal.
The more economical process of tooth whitening is the over-the-counter. These are the products we always see in the local drug stores and are available for immediate use. They also contain hydrogen peroxide and carbamide. However, more often than not, those using these products are not good candidates for teeth whitening. Also, there is no professional who ensures that the products are being used correctly. The patient can not regulate or modify the dosage in order to achieve better results.
Finally, there is the question of effectiveness. Is their a guarantee that
the teeth will remain protected after undergoing treatment? Studies revealed
that tooth whitening is indeed safe and effective. Over-the-counter treatments
can always be supported by professional help from the dentist. It is always
best to read the instuctions on the label of over-the-counter products so
as not to overdo the results.
