Have No Fear With Your Dentist

Most people are afraid of the dentist, especially kids. I myself was once afraid of the dentist. If I go to the dentist to have a new procedure done on me, I’ll be probably shaking of fear too. It’s probably because going to the dentist resembles being probed by an alien. Or maybe there’s just something freaky about someone sticking his hand in your mouth. For whatever reason we are afraid of dentist, we must learn to befriend them. Having great fear of dentist, only means that we are risking the health of our teeth. We need to change our views of dentist because it will help our teeth.

One way to overcome your fear of dentist is that you get a good dentist referred by a close friend or family. This will help you avoid getting unskilled dentist that will just worsen your experience and fear of dentists. A good dentist should be very patient, highly competent, and genuinely cares. The dentist should also have the ability to comfort you through past traumatic experience and can try to make every meeting pain free.

On the first visit on a new dentist, he should try to know more about the patient through his medical and dental records. After which he should discuss the more about it with the patient. To make the patient more comfortable, the dentist should be able to explain more to the patient about the procedure.

On the second visit the dentist should talk more to the patient. The dentist should learn what about dentistry stresses the patient. The dentist should also ask about their last meeting and if the patient got freaked out. The dentist should then think of ways to eliminate the stress. Performing examinations and x-rays can help the dentist develop a treatment plan.

After the 1st two visits and the next visit will include the actual procedures, it is best to bring in a relative or someone to support you. It is also best for the dentist to tell the patient what to expect during the procedure to reduce the stress of the person. Most people have said that the unknown is really the cause of many fears. So it is best if the person has some knowledge about the procedure to be done to reduce fear or stress.

It is important to develop a great patient-dentist relationship. If you’re not satisfied with the relationship you and your dentist have, you can dump him or her for a better one.
