Bruxism

If you are suffering painful jaws and headaches in the morning it might not be because you snore too much. You might be suffering from Bruxism. Other symptoms will include your teeth suffer because it has become sensitive from the cold, touch or other stimuli.

Bruxism is more commonly known as the grinding of teeth. The bottom and upper jaw will clinch together and the bottom and upper set of teeth will be grinding each other. A person will have a hard time to know if he or she is suffering from bruxism because people do this subconsciously. People who suffer from this usually learn all about for friends. The person who warns the friend that he or she is suffering from Bruxism realizes this because of the noise the suffering person makes when he sleeps.

Although this occurs mostly when we sleep, it also occurs when we are awake. The worst thing about it is when we sleep the biting force is stronger. It could be six times stronger. The significant damage is also done when we are sleeping.

Bruxism causes the following:

• Headaches, Ear-aches and sore facial muscles –bruxism is caused by the same muscles we use when we chew food. These muscles will feel sore every time we wake up in the morning. The jaw will feel tight and the mouth will feel painful when the sides are touched. The muscle pains will then manifest it as headaches, earaches or neck pains.

• When we grind our teeth it will also be damaged making it look shorter.

• When the enamel of the tooth is worn out, the dentin layer becomes exposed making it sensitive to cold, touch or other stimuli.

• The fillings can be cracked or fractured due to the pressure.

• The temperomandibular joint can also be damaged. This is the joint that connects the lower and upper jaw. When this is damaged chewing and talking will be harder.

When you see children grinding their teeth, it is not much to worry about. The children usually grind their teeth because of other pains such as ear infections or colds. Children who suffer bruxism will usually grow out of it and will not cause them much damage.

If you think you are suffering from bruxism it is best to go to your dentist. The dentist will give you a mouth guard to wear when you are sleeping. It will be the mouth guard that will take the damage instead of your teeth. The dentist can also tell you what the proper position of your teeth and tongue should be. Reducing alcohol intake is also helpful, because alcohol worsens bruxism.

Also try to manage your stress because it is believed that stress is the main cause of bruxism.
